Thank you for your messages.
It does seem to have something to do with the template -> Yootheme.
When I switch to Cassiopea then the icon appears.
Fun Fact:
The HTML code remains identical:
<span class="icon-eye icon-fw" aria-hidden="true">
::before
</span>

The same CSS file is also loaded but without parameters:
media/system/css/joomla-fontawesome.min.css?880511

It remains strange...
